Avalanche Lake – Glacier National Park

This was my first day and first hike in Glacier National Park, and it did not disappoint!

The trail starts along the Trail of the Cedars, which is a beautiful, easy trail that walks among lots of large cedar trees. You also walk over flowing rivers and past some small waterfalls.

The beginning of the trail is heavily wooded, but as you continue along the Avalanche Lake Trail, you start to see some openings in the trees that offer beautiful views of the mountains overhead.

After about 2 miles, we arrived at Avalanche Lake. The first viewpoint you come to is breathtaking, but we continued along the trail that runs on the right side of the lake to get to even more beautiful views. There is a beach that runs along the lake and many people were walking into the water.

It is hard to see in some of the pictures, but since this lake is formed mostly by snow melt, the water is crystal clear, as are most of the lakes in Glacier National Park.

My favorite part of this hike was seeing the water flow down the side of the mountain in various spots. Several little waterfalls formed from the melting snow.
